Baltimore Oriole

After wintering in Central America, these Baltimore Orioles have selected a perfect nesting spot; high in a cottonwood tree. The Female Oriole alone weaves the nest for the brood. It can take her a week or more to construct the sturdy, tightly woven basket. Using grasses, bark, wool and even horsehair, she may recycle some material from previous year’s nests–often still hanging nearby. Both parents will spend a frantic two weeks feeding their young a healthy diet of insects. Well fed, as seen here, the young are sometimes reluctant to leave the nest too soon.
