Spring Turkeys are here!

Every late winter/early spring, turkeys flock here in the Northwoods. They join into groups of up to 100 birds. Moving about within the flocks, the tom turkeys position themselves for the hens benefit. Watch how this tom moves his tail strategically so each individual hen can notice him as they move about. He literally follows them with his tail. Hens mostly ignore the tom at this point, but they are watching, and remembering. Later, when the time is right, those same toms will be available and the hens will be paying closer attention. For now, the main focus is finding the last food available in these late winter feeding grounds, maintaining warmth, and anticipating the new spring—hopefully right around the corner!
