Ruffed Grouse Rhythm

The beginning of April signals the turning point for this Ruffed Grouse. Mating season is fast approaching and he has this exact location picked out; he is ready to start advertising. By fanning his wings back and forth repetitiously, he creates a low, reverberating song that carries through the airwaves. He will repeat this procedure many times, calling closer any females nearby, and challenging any males. His log, one of several in the area, has been carefully selected for the right qualities—location, length, height off the ground and acoustics. He will continue to use the same drumming platforms year after year—putting his moves into effect, impressing the girls and wafting his genes forward to the next generation.
